BALTIMORE, Md. -- Senior forward Trista Snyder (West Chester, PA/Unionville) scored a game-high 16 points and freshman forward Julie Miller (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) added 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 59-52 victory over visiting McDaniel Tuesday night at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The win is the fifth straight and the 10th in the last 11 games for the Blue Jays, who improve to 17-2 overall and 12-1 in the Centennial Conference. McDaniel had its school-record 13-game winning streak snapped a slips to 18-3, 14-1.
The Blue Jays led just 48-47 with 2:43 remaining after McDaniel's Kelly Cramp (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) polished off an 11-1 Green Terror run when she scored inside. However, a 14-foot jumper by senior Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights) gave the Blue Jays a little breathing room at 50-47 and she added four free throws over the next 70 seconds to push the lead to 54-48. The teams then traded free throws to make it 55-49, but Cramp buried a three-pointer from the wing with 29 seconds remaining to pull the Terror within 55-52. That would be all the scoring for McDaniel, however and junior Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) and Snyder both nailed a pair of free throws in the final 21 seconds to seal the win.
McDaniel started strong as a Sara Franz's (Catonsville, MD/Seton Keough) three-pointer ignited an 8-1 run to start the game and the lead was 12-5 when she nailed a short jumper with 12:16 remaining in the first half. The Blue Jays then used an 11-1 run to take a 16-13 lead with just under nine minutes remaining in the half. Miller jump-started the spree with a three-pointer and added a pair of layups during the run as well. Hopkins maintained the lead for the remainder of the first half, leading by as many as six and as few as one in the final nine minutes before carrying a 32-27 lead into halftime.
A late-game surge didn't look like it would be necessary early in the second half as an 11-0 run gave the Blue Jays their biggest lead of the game at 43-29 with just under 16 minutes remaining. Myers scored five points during the run, which was capped by a Snyder layup with 15:45 remaining.
The Blue Jays still led 47-36 after an Amanda Leese (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) layup with 11:24 remaining, but the Green Terror, a 76-60 winner over the Blue Jays just three weeks ago, then went on their 11-1 run. Back-to-back layups by Katy Powell (Smithsburg, MD/Smithsburg) and Kristy Costa (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) made it 47-40 and Costa added a jumper and a free throw in a span of just 28 seconds to make it 48-45. That set the stage for Cramp's layup that made it 48-47 and the ensuing run by the Blue Jays to close the game.
Hopkins, which has now won 17 straight games at home and 20 of its last 21 Centennial Conference regular season games, got 13 points and four rebounds from Myers in addition to Miller and Snyder's efforts. The Blue Jays held a slim, 44-43 advantage in rebounding.
Costa led the Terror with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Cramp chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds. However, McDaniel was held 25 points below its season scoring average and hit just 10-of-21 from the free throw line in falling for the first time since a 66-62 loss at Gwynedd-Mercy on December 13.
