Baltimore, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team posted a 23-13 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference action Thursday night at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
The Blue Jays improved to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the league, while the Bullets fell to 3-12 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
Hopkins took an early 10-0 lead as sophomore John Witzenbocker (Merrick, NY/Chaminade) earned a forfeit at 125 and junior Jason Suslavich (Winchester, MA/Winchester) posted a 10-2 major decision over Kevin Dougherty at 133. However, Gettysburg answered by winning the next four matches to take a 13-10 advantage.
Michael Russo recorded a 7-3 decision over freshman Marco Priolo (Chevy Chase, MD/St. John's College High) at 141, and Thomas Fives followed with a 3-2 decision over sophomore Dave Hopkins (Abinston, PA/Germantown Academy) at 149. After Caleb Seufert posted an 18-4 major decision over freshman Dustin Tamsen (Seaford, NY/Seaford) at 157, Joshua Kaplan notched a 4-2 decision over junior Joseph Selba (Pasadena, MD/Mt. St. Joe) at 165.
The Blue Jays tied the match at 13-13 when senior Mike Yuhaniak (Bethesda, MD/Churchill) recorded a 5-2 decision over Michael Denholtz at 174, and senior Rob Curry (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) gave Hopkins the lead for good with a 2-1 double-overtime decision over Christopher Coogan at 184. Junior Tony Dambro (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) then recorded a 5-3 decision over Jeffrey Morgan at 197, and senior Karol Gryczynski (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) followed with a 4-2 decision over Michale Pallanite at heavyweight.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 21, when the Blue Jays compete at the Centennial Conference Tournament in Lexington, VA, on the campus of Washington & Lee.
