Hopkins Remains Unbeaten With 17-10 Win Over Boston University

Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's-DE) scored a team-high seven points on four goals and three assists while sophomore Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) added five goals to lead the No. 15 Blue Jay women's lacrosse team to a 17-10 victory over 13th-ranked Boston University Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field.

Hopkins took an 8-6 lead into halftime and scored the first two goals of the second period to go up four. Junior Anne Crisafulli (Garden City, NY/Garden City) scored off an assist from freshman Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's of Annapolis) 1:08 into the half, and Voight scored off a feed from freshman Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) with 27:38 remaining. Kaitlyn Cuneo brought the Terriers within three with a free position goal at the 26:04 mark, but Hopkins put the game away by scoring six consecutive goals to go up 16-7 with 12:54 on the clock.

Sophomore Kelley Putnam (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Pearce opened the run with free position goals, and after Pearce found Voight for a goal, Pearce scored on another free position shot to make it a 14-7 game. Putnam then scored off a feed from Pearce, and Janice scored off a Putnam pass to end the spurt.

Boston University responded with three straight goals, and Pearce capped the scoring with a free position goal with 1:57 remaining.

The Terriers struck first just 25 seconds into the game when Alyssa Trudel found Mary Beth Miller for a goal, but the Blue Jays answered with three straight goals and did not trail again. Voight scored a free position goal with 27:27 left to tie the game, and junior Erin Riordan (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) found Key twice for goals to put Hopkins up two. Miller responded with an unassisted goal, but Key and Pearce scored unassisted goals to give the Blue Jays a 5-2 lead at the 20:46 mark.

Angie Martin scored an unassisted goal for Boston University and Lindsay Lewis found Keely Anderson for a goal to make it a one-goal game, but Voight scored off a Key assist and Pearce found senior Marlena Wittelsberger (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney) for a goal to put Hopkins back up three at 7-4 with 7:20 to play. Voight added a free position goal with 6:08 remaining before Martin scored an unassisted goal and Kelly Trahon scored off a Lewis assist late as the Terriers pulled within two at the half.

Key finished with three goals and two assists while Putnam had two goals and an assist for the Blue Jays, who improved to 7-0 on the season. Miller scored a team-high three goals while Lewis added a goal and an assist for Boston University, which dropped its second straight while falling to 2-2 on the year.

The 13th-ranked Terriers are tied for the highest ranked team that Hopkins has defeated since moving to the Division I level. The Blue Jays defeated No. 13 Yale, 13-6, on April 28, 2001 and No. 13 Ohio State, 11-10, on April 6, 2002.

Hopkins sophomore Lauren Riddick (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) made 11 saves in the Hopkins goal, while Anne Sheridan stopped seven shots for the Terriers.

Each team took 27 shots and committed 30 fouls, while the Terriers held a slim 24-23 advantage in ground balls and a 16-13 edge in draw controls. Key won five draws for the Blue Jays, while Pearce collected five ground balls and Janice added four.

Hopkins will look to remain undefeated Wednesday when the Blue Jays host American at 4 p.m.
