Seventh-Ranked Maryland Holds Off No. 9 Hopkins, 14-11

Baltimore, MD - Maryland senior Kelly Coppedge scored six goals and assisted on another as the seventh-ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team dealt No. 9 Johns Hopkins its first defeat of the season by posting a 14-11 victory over the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.

The Terrapins, who are now 6-0 all-time against Hopkins, won their ninth straight game to improve to 11-2. The Blue Jays fell to 10-1 on the season and had their Division I school record winning streak snapped at 10 games.

Maryland wasted little time in taking control of the game, as Acacia Walker scored two unassisted goals to put the Terrapins up 2-0 just 2:08 into the contest. Hopkins freshman Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's of Annapolis) put the Blue Jays on the board with an unassisted goal at the 22:45 mark, but Maryland answered with six straight goals to take an 8-1 lead with 7:21 remaining in the half.

Coppedge, who became the 22nd player in Division I history to reach the 200-goal plateau, opened the run with a goal off an assist from Walker and added an unassisted goal with 17:32 on the clock. Laura Warren, Coppedge and Walker followed with free position goals, and Coppedge closed the spurt with another unassisted tally.

JHU senior Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's-DE) brought Hopkins within 8-2 with a free position goal at the 1:11 mark, and the Blue Jays went into the break down six.

Hopkins senior Marlena Wittelsberger (Phoenix, MD/Dulaney) made it a five-goal game by scoring off an assist from Key with 26:52 remaining, but Jessica Dorney scored an unassisted goal and Warren converted a free position shot to make it a 10-3 game with 24:25 to play. Key answered for Hopkins when she scored off a Pearce feed, but Coppedge found Mollie Reese for a goal and Annie Collins added an unassisted goal to put the Terrapins up 12-4 with 22:08 remaining.

Junior Erin Riordan (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) scored off assists from Key and Pearce to pull Hopkins within six at the 16:04 mark, and after Coppedge scored a free position goal, sophomore Kelley Putnam (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored twice, the second coming off an assist from sophomore Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty), to make it 13-8 game with 6:09 left.

Coppedge scored an unassisted goal with 3:18 remaining, but the Blue Jays scored three times in the final 1:28 to account for the final margin. Pearce and Riordan scored unassisted goals before Key found Putnam for the final goal with 32 seconds to play.

Riordan and Putnam each scored a team-high three goals for Hopkins, while Key had a team-high five points on two goals and three assists and Pearce chipped in two goals and two assists. Sophomore Lauren Riddick (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) made eight saves in the Blue Jay goal, while junior Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) picked up a game-high six ground balls and Pearce added three ground balls and three draw controls.

Walker finished with three goals and an assist for the Terrapins, while Warren added two goals. Kirah Miles made 10 saves in goal for Maryland.

The Blue Jays play their final home game of the season Wednesday when they host Villanova at 7 p.m.
