Collegeville, PA - Freshman Mary Gorski recorded a team-high 30 assists and 14 digs to lead Johns Hopkins past Ursinus 3-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Tuesday.
The Blue Jays (4-2, 1-0 CC) defeated the Bears (1-7, 0-1 CC) winning in four sets 30-23, 30-24, 28-30 and 30-24 to capture the conference opener for both teams.
Jen Hajj knocked down 21kills, while Katie O'Callaghan posted 20 kills and Lizzie Kay tallied 14 digs.
Erin O'Hara (Annapolis, MD/South River) led Ursinus with 15 kills and 38 digs. Amanda Morello (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) added a game-high 45 digs and Leah Rosin-Pritchard (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) added a season-high 40.
Johns Hopkins captured game two 30-24, before the Bears fought back to win game three, 30-28. O'Hara pulled Ursinus out to a 14-5 lead, winning eight-straight points. Down 14-22, the Blue Jays tied the game at 22 and took their first lead on an ace from Kay. From there, both teams battled point-for-point until the Bears regained the lead and closed out the game on kills from O'Hara and Rosin-Pritchard.
In game four, O'Callaghan hit three kills in a row to give Johns Hopkins a 24-22 edge. The next three points belonged to the Blue Jays, thanks to Ursinus errors and another kill from O'Callaghan. A Hajj block and kill sealed the match 30-24.
With game one tied at 19, the Blue Jays took control and won the next four points on Mary Gorski's serve, forcing an Ursinus timeout at 23-19. Amy Green and Adri Eisen each recorded kills, while Jen Hajj capped off a 5-0 run with an ace for the game, 30-23.
Melissa George (King of Prussia, PA/Villa Maria Academy) handed out 31 assists and Allison Hitchens (Sellersville, PA/Landsdale Catholic) tallied 23 digs.
