BALTIMORE, Md. - The Princeton Tigers built a 9-4 halftime lead, and held off a third-quarter JHU surge to down the Blue Jays 16-11 in water polo action this evening. The win drops the Blue Jays to 5-5, while the Tigers remain perfect at 6-0.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, as junior John Stover (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) scored two goals in the first quarter. Senior Brian Mead (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) scored the lone Blue Jay goal of the first quarter, the first of his 4.
In the second quarter, Princeton extended its lead by out-scoring the Blue Jays 6-3 in the quarter. Stover scored two goals, while Mike McKenna (Wyndmoor, PA/Penn Charter) ended the half with two consecutive goals for the Tigers.
The Blue Jays though down 9-4 at the half, did not give up. Joe Jankowski (Coronado, CA/Coronado), Chris Hemmerle (Souderton, PA/Souderton) and Mead all scored in the third quarter as the Blue Jays made a 5-3 run, running the score to 12-9.
The Tigers were too much for the Blue Jays and were able to hold onto their lead. The Tigers scored three times in the final quarter, while the Blue Jays could only muster two, not enough for the comeback.
