The Gettysburg Bullets defeated the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in Centennial Conference volleyball action this evening in Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays fall to 7-9 on the year and 1-2 in conference, while the Bullets improve to 12-2 and 1-0 in the conference
In the first game of the match, the Blue Jays and Bullets fought to a 24-24 tie, at which point Johns Hopkins called their first time out. After two quick Gettysburg points, the Blue Jays called their second time out down 26-24. After losing another point to bring the score to 27-24, the Blue Jays broke the serve of the Bullets and sophomore Adri Eisen (New York City, NY/Trinity) served successfully twice for the Blue Jays to knot the score at 27. The Bullets then broke Eisen?s serve and rattled off two points for the 30-27 victory.
Using their momentum following the game one win victory, junior Shannon Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) served ten consecutive times in the early part of the second game to give the Bullets an early 11-1 lead. The Blue Jays tried to cut into the Bullets lead, but only came as close as 13-8, as the Bullets ran away with game two 30-15.
In the third game, the two teams played fairly evenly for the majority of the match. With the score 19-18, sophomore Lizzie Kay (Pacific Palisades, CA/The Cate School) served successfully three times to run the Blue Jay lead to 22-18. The Blue Jays maintained the four point advantage until junior Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) and the Bullets toook the lead 27-26. After tying the game at 27, the Bullets ran the score to 29-27, in their favor, but the Blue Jays avoided losing the match point, as senior Betsy Baydala (Rockville Center, NY/Southside) served the Blue Jays to the game three victory.
The fourth match was not as kind to the Blue Jays. After trading points and serves for the beginning of the game the Bullets went on a run. With JHU leading 8-7, the Bullets broke the serve of the Jays and successful rattled off six straight points. This lead would be all Gettysburg needed as they cruised to the fourth game, and match victory 30-19.
For Gettysburg senior Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) led the team with 21 kills, while classmate Erin Burkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) added 14. Smith collected 55 assists to lead the Bullets, while sophomore Steph Vial (Haover, PA/Delone Catholic) garnered 28 digs.
Junior Katie O?Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) led the Blue Jays with 13 kills, while Baydala picked up 19 assists and seven kills. O?Callaghan and Kay each picked up 21 digs for Hopkins.
