Water Polo Wins Two at Navy Open

Sept. 8, 2004

- Junior James Singleton (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake) scored eight goals over the weekend to lead the Johns Hopkins water polo team to a 2-2 mark in the Navy Open. The Blue Jays picked up wins over Grove City and Gannon, but dropped matches to California and MIT.

In the first game of the tournament, Singleton scored the only two goals the Blue Jays could muster, as the fourth ranked Bears of California Berkley scored 17 times.

The Blue Jays bounced back in their second match, defeating the Wolverines of Grove City 14-1. JHU used a balanced scoring attack, as three players registered multiple goals, and a total of ten players scored. Senior Marc Sanford (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) set the pace for the Jays scoring three times, and freshman Chris Hemmerle (Souderton, PA/Souderton) and Singleton each scored twice.

On the second day of the Open, the Blue Jays continued their winning ways defeating Gannon 11-6. Singleton lead the Blue Jays with three goals, and Hemmerle and senior Brian Mead (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) each registered two goals. In their last game of the tournament the Blue Jays dropped a tough 9-7 game to MIT. Singleton scored three times and Mead and Sanford each had two goals.
