Kimball, Miller Lead Blue Jay Women Past Ursinus

BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City) shot 3-for-3 from three-point range and tallied 15 points, seven steals, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks to keep the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team undefeated in the Centennial Conference with a 73-41 win over Ursinus at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays improved to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the conference while the Bears fell to 5-8, 2-5 Centennial.

Hopkins out-shot, out-rebounded and out-played Ursinus to win its fourth straight game by more than 30 points. The Blue Jays jumped to a 4-0 lead off an Alissa Burkholder (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) jumper and a steal and a layup by Kimball, and built an 11-point lead, 17-6, at the 10:51 mark before the Bears closed in 17-14. That was the closest the Bears would get, as Hopkins ended the half with a 13-1 run capped by a Kimball three at the buzzer and entered the break ahead 35-18.

Johns Hopkins shot 42 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range in the first half while Ursinus was 33 percent from the floor including just 1 for 4 behind the arc. Kimball finished the half with 10 points, three rebounds, two blocks and three steals while Burkholder added seven points off 3-for-5 shooting. Sophomore Julie Miller (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) had a team-high nine rebounds for Hopkins, which controlled the boards 23-15.

The Blue Jays never relented in the second half, making it a 20-point ballgame within the first four minutes and a 30-point game with nine minutes to play. Sophomore Whitney Davis (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) scored all of her 11 points in the second half, when she shot 5 for 7 from the floor and added one free throw.

Miller finished 11 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double this season and second in the last three games. Burkholder added nine points while senior Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) had another all-around game of six points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Molly Guntli had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Ursinus, which shot just 28 percent from the field and 9 percent from the three-point line while committing 27 turnovers. Hopkins also finished with the rebounding advantage, 45-26.

The Blue Jays visit Carnegie Mellon this Tuesday, January 17 at 6 p.m. for their final non-conference game of the season and then return home Thursday to meet Centennial rival McDaniel.
