BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) set career-highs of 12 points and eight rebounds as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Bryn Mawr 59-28 in a Centennial Conference matchup at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays improved to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference while the Owls dropped to 0-11 and 0-6.
Hopkins used strong defense in the second half to turn a 24-16 halftime edge into a 33-point winning margin, which was its largest lead of the game. The Blue Jays have not lost to the Owls in their 12 meetings dating back to 1993.
Both teams came out of the gates cold with Johns Hopkins shooting 29 percent and Bryn Mawr at 26 percent in the first half. Senior Alissa Burkholder (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) scored an easy layup 16 seconds into the game for the Blue Jays' first lead, which they extended to 12 points with four minutes remaining. The Owls then scored six straight to cut their deficit to six points before entering the half trailing 24-16.
Dodrill led the Blue Jays with eight points at the break while the Owls' Amy Venditta shot 4 for 6 for a team-high eight points. Sophomore Julie Miller (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) led all players on the boards with nine and Hopkins had a 24-18 rebounding advantage in the first half.
The Blue Jays put the game away in the second half with pressure defense that led to 24 points off 18 Bryn Mawr turnovers. Hopkins finished with 24 steals, including a career-high seven from freshman Chevanie Smith (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield), while the Owls had 32 turnovers.
Johns Hopkins out-rebounded the Owls 50-32, shot 33 percent (24 for 73) overall and held Bryn Mawr to 26 percent (11 for 43) shooting, including just 11 percent (1 for 9) from three-point range.
Junior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City) added 12 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists, while Burkholder shot 5 for 7 for 11 points and Miller finished with a game-high 12 rebounds. Venditta led Bryn Mawr with 10 points.
Johns Hopkins returns to action at Haverford this Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m.
