BALTIMORE - Johns Hopkins secured its first Centennial Conference volleyball victory by rolling past Muhlenberg, 3-0, on Saturday evening at Goldfarb Gym.
Game one got off to a tight start, but after the Blue Jays gained a 7-6 lead, they never looked back. The advantage expanded to as much as nine, as Hopkins jumped out to a 23-14 lead. Muhlenberg closed the gap to 25-19, but the Blue Jays took the game, 30-25.
Junior Lizzie Kay (Pacific Palisades, CA/The Cate School) eclipsed the Hopkins career digs record in game one, passing the mark set by Betsy Baydala from 2001-04 at 1,627.
Game two saw Hopkins jump out to an early 9-1 lead, after a pair of service runs by Kay and freshman Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep), who each reeled off four points in a row. The margin ballooned to as much as 19, with Hopkins going up 25-6 en route to a 30-15 win.
Muhlenberg got its first lead of the match in game three, which got as big as 11-5. Hopkins narrowed the gap and the two teams stayed close, until a 11-4 run to close the game for Hopkins yielded a 30-23 win.
Junior Natalia Fijalkowski (Windsor, CA/Windsor) and senior Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul II) paced the Blue Jays with 13 kills each. Freshman Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) led the way with 47 assists. Kay took home match-high honors with 22 digs and three service aces.
Sophomore Jess Anselmi (Franklin, MA/Franklin) led the Mules with 10 kills. Seniors Jen Weist (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) and Julie Lauro (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) each had 14 digs.
Hopkins improved to 15-5 overall, 1-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Muhlenberg slipped to 8-8, with a 1-2 record in league play.
