Hopkins Upsets Princeton In Water Polo

Oct. 15, 2005

BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Robert Bates scored four goals, including two in overtime, to help #20 Johns Hopkins to a 15-14 upset of #11 Princeton in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) league game on Friday. The Blue Jays scored six goals in the fourth quarter to rally from a 10-6 deficit and force the extra period.

Hopkins entered the game ranked 20th in the all-division poll, first in the Division III poll, and fifth in the CWPA, while Princeton was 11th in the nation and second in the league. The Tigers won the first two meetings this year, 14-5 and 11-8.

The Blue Jays led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter but the Tigers outscored them 4-0 in the second to take a 7-4 halftime lead. After falling behind 11-6 at the start of the final period, Hopkins used two goals from freshman Josh Kratz and one apiece from four other Blue Jays to tie the game at 12. In overtime, Bates tallied two goals and senior James Singleton added one to edge Princeton, 15-14.

Singleton finished with three goals, as did sophomore Sean McCreery who scored all of his goals in the first quarter.

The Blue Jays return to action in their home pool this Sunday, October 16, against Salem International and Bucknell.
