BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Adam Simon scored the game-winning goal on senior night and the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team finished with a 3-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall under the lights at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays (11-2-4, 5-1-3 CC) clinched the #4 seed in the Centennial Conference tournament and will host the #5 seed Gettysburg on Wednesday, November 2, while the Diplomats ended their season at 8-5-3, 5-4 CC.
Franklin & Marshall took the first two shots of the night but did not record another shot until the 90th minute. The Blue Jays dominated throughout the game, out-shooting the Diplomats 20-4 and earning an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Simon scored unassisted at 20:13 when he blasted a long-distance, left-footed shot into the far corner of the goal, and Johns Hopkins carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Blue Jays led 7-2 on shots and 3-0 on corners.
Freshmen Matthew Carlson and Nicholas Gauna each scored a second-half goal to secure the Hopkins win. Carlson's goal came unassisted at 50:53 after he rebounded junior Trip Neil's blocked shot, giving the Blue Jays the 2-0 lead. Gauna scored his team-high seventh goal of the year unassisted at 79:28 when he came up with the loose ball after a corner kick and fired a shot past F&M keeper, junior Ed Stelz.
Stelz finished with nine saves, while Hopkins junior Dan Coble needed just one to earn his eighth win and seventh shutout of the year.
The win marked head coach Matt Smith's 200th career victory at Johns Hopkins. He is 200-39-16 in 13 seasons with the Blue Jays.
Hopkins hosts Gettysburg, which it tied 0-0 on September 28, this Wednesday, November 2 (time TBA) in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament.
