Hopkins Women Slip Past Swarthmore, 60-57

SWARTHMORE, PA - Junior Julie Miller scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds and senior Amanda Leese added 12 points and nine rebounds as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball slipped past Swarthmore 60-57 in its Centennial Conference season-opener. The Blue Jays improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Garnet dropped to 2-2, 1-1 CC.

Hopkins has now defeated Swarthmore in the last five meetings, with tonight's contest being the closest and just one of two decided by less than 10 points.

The Blue Jays led 33-30 at the half after 10 ties and just two Swarthmore leads. Each team shot 39 percent from the field and were near even on rebounds (Swarthmore 20, Johns Hopkins 19), but Hopkins hit 7 of 10 free throws for the halftime lead. Miller and Leese each had eight points at the break, while Swarthmore's Jennifer Stevenson led all scorers with 11 points.

Swarthmore scored the first six points of the second period before Hopkins rallied to its largest lead of the game, 44-38, with 11:58 remaining. The Garnet cut it to two points four times in the final 2:10 but the Blue Jays hung on for the three-point win. Miller went 5 for 5 and junior Haley Wojdowski shot 2 for 2 from the foul line in the last 1:26.

Hopkins shot 36 percent overall (22 for 61) and 75 percent (15 for 20) from the foul line but hit just 1 of 10 three-pointers. Swarthmore finished 31 percent from the field, 13 percent from the arc, and 71 percent from the foul line, and held a 42-41 rebounding edge. Stevenson led all scorers with 15 points off 5-for-9 shooting from the field, while Karen Berk added 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Sophomore Andrea Dodrill added eight points and eight rebounds for Hopkins.

Johns Hopkins hosts Muhlenberg this Saturday, December 3, at 2 pm. Donations to the American Cancer Society will be accepted at the door and the NCAA's official mascot, J.J. Jumper, will be present to entertain the fans.
