SAN ANTONIO, TX -- The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team used a 17-4 run midway through the second half to turn a three-point deficit into a 10-point lead that would later swell to as many as 18 as the Blue Jays knocked off Ripon, 61-47 in the opening round of the Trinity University Holiday Classic. Hopkins (7-1) ran its winning streak to five games and will play the winner of the Trinity/Illinois Wesleyan game in tomorrow's championship game.
The Blue Jays led by as many as 12 in the first half and a layup by junior Julie Miller early in the second half gave Hopkins a 31-20 lead. However, the Red Hawks responded with a 15-1 run to take a 35-32 lead. An Anne Ackerman three-pointer jump-started the spree for Ripon, which also got a pair of three pointers from Morgan Roberts to take control.
The Blue Jays started their comeback when sophomore Andrea Dodrill converted a conventional three-point play with 13:04 remaining to tie the score at 35. A three-pointer by senior Katie Kimball and a layup by Dodrill in a a span of less than 40 seconds gave the Blue Jays a 40-35 lead and the Red Hawks were never closer than that the rest of the way.
Dodrill scored seven of her 11 points and senior Amanda Leese added six of her 13 during what eventually became a 27-6 run that built the Blue Jays' lead to 58-40 with 3:34 remaining. Miller scored nine of her 10 points in the second half for Hopkins, which limited Ripon to just 28-percent shooting from the field. The Blue Jays held a 45-35 rebounding advantage and forced 24 turnovers.
Kimball led a balanced scoring attack as she had 15 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Kimball's three blocks give her 111 in her career and move her past Jennifer Butterwei (110) into first place on JHU's career blocked shots list. Leese chipped in with the 13 points and six rebounds, while Dodrill (11 points) and Miller (10 points, nine rebounds) rounded out JHU's double-figure scorers.
Mona Delsman was the only Ripon (5-3) player to reach double figures as she punched up 10 points. The Red Hawks hit just 15-of-52 shots from the floor and were just 11-of-24 from the free throw line as they had their three-game winning streak snapped.
