SAN ANTONIO, TX -- Host Trinity outscored Johns Hopkins 27-13 in the final 12 minutes of the game and held the Blue Jays without a basket over the final 6:12 as the Tigers pulled out a 64-59 victory in the championship game of the Trinity Women's Basketball Holiday Classic Thursday afternoon. Hopkins had its five-game winning streak snapped and falls to 7-2 while the Tigers ran their winning streak to seven games and improve to 7-1.
The Blue Jays appeared to be in control as they used a 12-0 run to break a 37-37 tie and jump to a 49-37 lead with 12:19 remaining. Senior Katie Kimball hit back-to-back three pointers in a 30-second span to cap the run, which was jump-started by an Andrea Dodrill jumper and included another jumper by Kimball.
Trinity began to slowly slice into the lead and a 7-0 run in a span of just over a minute trimmed a 53-44 deficit to 53-51. Krista Prato-Matthews highlighted the run with a three-pointer with 6:41 remaining to make it a two-point game, but Kimball answered with a short jumper at the 6:12 mark to make it 55-51. That would be the final basket of the game for the Blue Jays.
A Prato-Matthews layup with just under five minutes remaining pulled the Tigers to within 55-54 and Trinity won the game from the free throw line down the stretch as the Tigers went 8-for-8 in the final 3:35 to seal the victory. Meghan Scholbe hit 4-of-4 from the line during the final spree and a Jennifer Farrar layup down the stretch was the only basket Trinity would need to take the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Scholbe led a balanced Trinity scoring attack with 12 points and added 10 rebounds. She was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Farrar and Martha King added 10 points apiece for Trinity.
Kimball, who earned a spot on the All-Tournamen Team, led the Blue Jays with a season-high 22 points. Junior Haley Wojdowski chipped in with 13 and sophomore Andrea Dodrill added seven points and 10 rebounds. Junior Julie Miller joined Kimball on the All-Tournament team as she totaled 16 points and 17 rebounds in Hopkins' two games.
The Blue Jays will next be in action on January 4 when they travel to Atlanta to take on Emory.
