Free Throws Help Hopkins Past Muhlenberg, 74-63

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team hit 21 of 27 second-half free throws and shot 50 percent from the field in the final period to rally from a 12-point deficit to a 74-63 win over visiting Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference action at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Mules fell to 4-1, 1-1 CC.

Hopkins outscored Muhlenberg 49-31 in the second half after never leading in the first period, trailing by as many as 12 points, and entering the break down 32-25. Muhlenberg junior Megan Courtney led all scorers at halftime with 13 points off 5-for-10 field goal shooting and 3-for-4 shooting from the line. The Blue Jays shot just 6 for 31 (.194) from the field and were tied with the Mules in rebounding at 24 boards apiece. Junior Haley Wojdowski had a team-high seven points at the half.

In the second period, sophomore Andrea Dodrill scored four quick points off the bench to spark Hopkins. The Blue Jays trimmed the deficit from nine points, 34-25 at 18:40, to just one point, 42-41 at 13:49, before junior Whitney Davis tied the game for the first time with a free throw at 11:20. Two more foul shots from senior Katie Kimball put Hopkins on top 44-42 with 11 minutes remaining.

The Mules tied the game three more times and earned four more leads before the Blue Jays used a 10-1 run to put the game away. After Muhlenberg led 51-50 at 7:32, Kimball hit two foul shots to ignite the scoring streak, and seniors Katie O'Malley and Amanda Leese and junior Julie Miller all scored to put Hopkins ahead 61-51 with 3:55 to play. The Blue Jays hit 11 of 12 free throws in the final 1:29, leading by as many as 13 points before finishing with the 74-63 win.

Miller led Johns Hopkins with a double-double performance of 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes, while Davis added a season-high 11 points off 8-for-10 free-throw shooting. Kimball had seven rebounds, four steals, two assists, a block, and she went 8 for 10 from the line, where she scored all of her points. O'Malley finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

For Muhlenberg, Courtney had a game-high 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while freshman Lauren Boyle added 10 points.

The Blue Jays finished with a 48-39 advantage on the boards and shot 32 for 42 (.762) from the foul line. They went 33 percent overall from the field. The Mules shot 34 percent from the field, 7.7 percent behind the arc, and 69 percent from the free-throw line.

The win was the sixth straight for Hopkins against Muhlenberg; the Blue Jays lead the all-time series 17-5.

Johns Hopkins returns home this Tuesday, December 6, at 6 pm for a matchup with conference and state rival McDaniel (3-2, 0-1 CC).
