DURHAM, NC - Foilist Bryan Bishe went 3-0 against Duke during the Johns Hopkins men's fencing team's trip to Durham last Friday, Feb. 11. The Blue Jays faced three top 10 teams - #1 Ohio State, #4 Notre Dame and #10 Air Force - and also competed against North Carolina and the host Blue Devils.
Hopkins lost to top-ranked Ohio State 19-8 but grabbed a 5-4 win in saber, where Aaron Fernandes and Jason Park each went 2-1 and Fred Lee picked up one win. In JHU's bouts against the other ranked teams, Air Force swept wins in all three weapons but the Hopkins foilists lost just 5-4, as Bishe finished 2-1 and Max Yusem and Nick Marchuk each won one bout.
The foil squad of Notre Dame also edged the Blue Jays 5-4 with Yusem picking up two of Hopkins' wins. The Fighting Irish finished with a 19-8 win over the Jays.
Bishe, Yusem, Marchuk and James McIver combined for a 6-3 win against the UNC foilists but the Tar Heels edged Hopkins 15-12 overall. UNC won 7-2 in epee and 5-4 in saber, where Fernandes and Park each went 2-1.
Against the host Blue Devils, Fernandes went 3-0 while Park and Jake Sand each grabbed two wins for the 6-3 Hopkins win in saber. The Blue Jays also won in foil, where Bishe's 3-0 finish paced the 5-4 squad victory, but a 7-2 loss in epee left Hopkins short of Duke, 14-13.
