BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Alissa Burkholder (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) recorded a game-high 15 points and led Johns Hopkins in scoring for the third time in four games as the Blue Jays defeated Gettysburg 70-52 at Goldfarb Gymnasium. Hopkins, playing its final home game of the regular season, improved to 19-4 overall and 14-2 in the Centennial Conference while the Bullets dropped to 12-11 and 9-7.
Gettysburg kept it close for the first eight minutes of the game, when the teams combined for just 18 points. The Bullets had their only lead, 7-6, at 13:49 and trailed by just five, 13-8, at 10:13 before the Blue Jays went on a 10-2 run. Sophomores Brooke Strange (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School), Haley Wojdowski (Mars, PA/Mars Area) and Whitney Davis (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) all scored off the bench to help Hopkins extend its lead to 23-10 with 3:53 remaining, but it was the Blue Jay defense that controlled the period.
The Blue Jays grabbed eight steals, including four by senior Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic), blocked four shots and forced Gettysburg into 15 turnovers and 27 percent field goal shooting. Johns Hopkins shot 38 percent from the floor but missed 8 of 12 free throws and was out-rebounded 27-22 in the first half.
Ten Blue Jays scored in the first half, including Burkholder with seven and senior Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) and sophomore Julie Miller (Annandale, PA/Thomas Jefferson) with five apiece. The Jays led 34-22 at the break.
Felix grabbed a defensive rebound and took it the length of the court for the first points of the second half and junior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made it a 15-point game with a three-pointer in the Blue Jays' next possesion. Hopkins led by as many as 23 points in the second half before Gettysburg senior Elizabeth Ross hit a jumper from the foul line with 16 seconds remaining to reach her 1,000 career point milestone.
Burkholder finished the game 5 for 11 from the field and 3 for 6 from the three-point line while Davis and Strange added nine points apiece. Miller had a team-high nine rebounds and Felix led all players with five assists and eight steals. Kimball, returning from a three-game break due to injury, chipped in five points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks.
Emily Falk and Kathryn Reilly led Gettysburg with 15 and 13 points while Jen Bengel and Ross each scored eight points and added 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
Johns Hopkins visits Ursinus this Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. and plays its final regular-season game at Franklin & Marshall next Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. Hopkins, Dickinson and McDaniel have clinched playoff berths in the Centennial Conference Tournament, which is scheduled for Feb. 24, 26 and 27.
