BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Kelly Cramp (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead McDaniel (23-3, 16-2 CC) past Johns Hopkins (21-5, 16-2 CC) 72-59 in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. The Green Terror advances to the conference championship game tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 26 against No. 1 seed Dickinson.
Five different Terror scored in the first 6:30 as McDaniel jumped to a 12-2 lead. Johns Hopkins sophomore Katie O'Malley (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) hit two free throws and junior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City) sunk a layup to bring the Blue Jays within six, 14-8, with 11:35 to play in the first, but that was the closest they would get.
The Terror scored six straight points in the next two minutes to take a 20-8 lead before ending the half with its biggest advantage of the night, 35-20. Cramp led all scorers with eight points at the break, while sophomore Whitney Davis (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) was the only Blue Jay to score more than two points. She had six at the half.
McDaniel shot 42 percent from the field in the first half, while Hopkins made just eight field goals off 28 percent shooting. The Blue Jays were out-rebounded 25-20 and committed 13 turnovers.
After falling behind by 17 points on a Jacqueline Pundt (Mt. Airy, MD/Western Tech) post move, Johns Hopkins went on a 9-0 run to trail by just eight, 37-29, with 16:43 on the clock. Senior Alissa Burkholder (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) scored four points on two free throws and a layup, while sophomore Julie Miller (Annandale, PA/Thomas Jefferson) swished a three to pace the Blue Jay run.
Yet again, the Terror used balance scoring to answer Hopkins with a run of its own and take a 15-point lead, 50-35, with 9:08 remaining. The Jays got within seven, 63-56, with just under two minutes to play, but McDaniel put them away with 9-for-10 free throw shooting in the final 1:30.
Miller finished with 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive boards, while Burkholder (14 points) was the only other Blue Jay in double figures. Burkholder shot 5 for 11 from the field and 4 for 6 from the foul line, and chipped in three assists and three steals. Senior Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) added eight points and eight rebounds, and classmate Ashley Felix (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) had a game-high four assists.
Senior Brooke Weimer (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport) had 11 points including two three-pointers, and sophomore Katy Powell (Smithsburg, MD/Smithsburg) shot 6 for 6 from the foul line and finished with 10 points. The Terror shot 42 percent overall, while the Jays went 33 percent.
McDaniel travels to Dickinson for the Centennial Conference championship game tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.
