Balanced Attack Leads Hopkins Past Randolph-Macon 24-0

Box Score

Sept. 10, 2005

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins (2-0) consumed 38:51 of possession time and collected 483 total yards while holding Randolph-Macon (0-2) to only 145 in a 24-0 non-conference college football win at Homewood Field on Saturday.

This was the second time in two meetings between the two schools that Hopkins won with a 24-0 outcome, with the last coming on September 20, 2003.

The Blue Jays went right to work on the opening drive of the game, chewing 4:05 off the clock and moving the ball 80 yards as senior tailback T.J. Lyons (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) capped it off by punching in a three-yard score to give Hopkins the 7-0 lead.

A second quarter 36 yard field goal by sophomore kicker Ben Scott (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) at 2:31 gave Hopkins a 10-0 lead going into the break.

In the first half, the main story was the time of possession and third down conversions, as the Blue Jays kept R-MC's defense on the field for 20:02 and converted on seven of 11 third down situations.

The theme was much the same in the second half, as Hopkins used 6:30 on their first drive of the third quarter, highlighted by senior quarterback Zach DiIonno's (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) dive over the goal line to put the Blue Jays up 17-0.

Sophomore tailback Phil Roberts (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill) closed out the scoring at 13:07 of the fourth quarter with a 41-yard dash down the sideline for his first collegiate touchdown and a 24-0 lead.

Hopkins defense shined in the shutout, allowing the Jackets only 86 yards in the air and 59 on the ground. Junior defensive end Brian Nickel (Waupun, WI/Waupun) had six tackles, including three for loss and 1.5 sacks. Junior defensive lineman Anthony Woodard (Earlysville, VA/St. Anne's Belfield) also made three stops in the backfield and five altogether.

Senior defensive back Jonathon Farmer and freshman linebacker Nate Powers each had 10 stops for R-MC.

Lyons headlined the Hopkins rushing attack with 102 yards on 15 carries. Roberts produced 58 yards on the ground, carrying seven times.

DiIonno completed 23 of his 45 attempts for 241 yards. Senior wideout Anthony Triplin (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) caught seven of those passes for 94 yards.

Junior quarterback Steven Ahonen led the Yellow Jackets offensively, carrying the ball 14 times for 55 yards and completing seven of 11 passing attempts for 53 yards.

The series between these two teams was narrowed to 14-13-1, with R-MC maintaining the lead.

For the Blue Jays, this was their first shutout since October 4, 2003 when they notched their third blanking in a row with a 30-0 win over Dickinson.

Hopkins has won 13 consecutive games in September since a 50-27 loss to Bridgewater (Va.) in 2001.

Next Saturday, Hopkins will travel to Pittsburgh for a showdown with Carnegie Mellon at 1 p.m. Randolph-Macon heads to Winchester, Va. for a clash under the lights with 2004 playoff participant Shenandoah at 7 p.m.
