BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Robert Bates scored two first-quarter goals and sophomore Mitch Williams totaled 15 saves in goal to lead the Johns Hopkins water polo team to a 10-3 conference win over George Washington. The Blue Jays, ranked fifth in the CWPA, improved to 9-3 overall this season, while the eighth-ranked Colonials fell to 6-7.
Sophomore Sean McCreery and freshman Peter Davis each added one goal to Bates' two tallies in the first quarter to help the Blue Jays jump out to a 4-1 lead. Hopkins shut out George Washington in the second quarter, while Davis, sophomore Chris Hemmerle, and freshman Chris Hanson recorded one goal apiece for JHU. The Blue Jays led 7-1 at the break.
Junior David Strickland scored the only goal of the third quarter for a comfortable 8-1 Hopkins advantage entering the final period. George Washington scored two late goals but the Blue Jays countered each score with one of their own, as Hanson and freshman Alex Bond tallied the final two Hopkins goals.
The Blue Jays travel to Princeton this Saturday for conference matchups with Salem International and the host Tigers.
