ALLENTOWN, PA - The Muhlenberg women's basketball team held visiting Johns Hopkins to less than 20 points in both halves and the Mules did just enough offensively to post a 50-36 victory over the visiting Blue Jays Saturday afternoon. Muhlenberg improves to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference, while Johns Hopkins slips to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial.
Hopkins used a 10-2 run to turn an early 8-0 deficit into a 10-10 tie with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Julie Miller scored six of her 10 points during the run for the Blue Jays, who would never tie the game again. Muhlenberg answered Hopkins' run with a 15-5 spree of its own to take a 25-15 lead late in the second half and Hopkins was never closer than six the rest of the way. Tiffany Kirk hit a jumper and three-pointer to fuel the run, which also included a pair of baskets from Meghan Courtney and a three-pointer from Kristin Piscadlo as the Mules carried a 25-19 lead into the half.
The Mules wasted little time extending the six-point halftime lead as Piscadlo hit another three pointer and Courtney and Kirk both knocked down jumpers to ignite an 11-2 run to open the half to extend the lead to 36-21 with just over 13 minutes remaining. The Blue Jays quickly trimmed the deficit to 38-32 with an 11-2 run. Junior Haley Wojdowski converted on a conventional three-point play and a layup in a span of less than a minute to key the run, but Mules allowed just four points in the final seven minutes to pick up the win and move into a second-place tie in the Centennial with the Blue Jays.
Courtney scored a game-high 13 points and added 12 rebounds, while Piscadlo added 12 points for Muhlenberg. Wojdowski scored a team-high 11 points and Miller added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Hopkins, but the Blue Jays hit just 12-of-58 (.207) from the floor to seal their fate.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, January 18 at Franklin & Marshall.
