ATLANTA, GA - Senior Lynn Oberschmidt scored the game-winning basket with 43 seconds remaining and finished with a team-high 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Emory past Johns Hopkins 58-55 in Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles, winning their eighth straight contest, improved to 9-1 while the Blue Jays dropped to 7-3.
Hopkins took an early four-point lead but Emory pulled ahead by nine before the Blue Jays closed the first half with a 12-2 run to enter the break ahead 31-30. Junior Haley Wojdowski hit 4 of 7 field goals including three three-pointers, senior Katie Kimball added nine points, and junior Julie Miller had seven in the first period to pace the Blue Jays.
Emory dominated the early part of the second half as it outscored Johns Hopkins 17-5 in the first 11 minutes and took the largest lead of the game, 47-36, with 9:13 remaining. But Blue Jay freshman Jessica Rice scored five straight points to ignite a Hopkins run that led to a 53-53 tie with 2:41 on the clock.
Oberschmidt scored a layup off a pass from Erica Kaplan to give Emory the two-point lead with 2:12 remaining and, after Hopkins freshman Andrea Dodrill tied the game with a post move at 1:09, scored a jumper off another Kaplan assist to put the Eagles ahead for the last time, 57-55. Junior Beth Bergmann, who scored 10 points off the bench, sealed the win with a free throw with 20 seconds to play.
Wojdowski led Hopkins in scoring with 16 points including 4-of-6 shooting from the arc, while Kimball and Miller added 12 and 10 points respectively. Senior Katie O'Malley finished with team-highs in rebounds (six), assists (six), and steals (three).
The Blue Jays shot 32.7 percent from the field, while the Eagles shot 37.5 percent from the field and 82.6 percent (19 for 23) from the foul line. Emory out-rebounded Johns Hopkins 42-31.
Hopkins, looking to snap a two-game losing skid, hosts Bryn Mawr this Saturday at 11 am.
