WASHINGTON, DC - The Johns Hopkins water polo team (10-10) evened its record Wednesday night with a 10-7 win over George Washington. The Blue Jays swept the Colonials in their home-and-home series this season.
The Colonials struck just 16 seconds in to take an early lead, but Hopkins responded with goals from junior Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle) and sophomore Peter Davis (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) to take a 3-1 lead. John Hornberger scored with 47 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to cut the lead to 3-2.
Hopkins pushed its lead to 5-2 with McCreery's second of the night for the only goal in the second quarter. The Blue Jays then outscored the Colonials 4-1 in the third, pushing out to an 8-3 lead. Junior Chris Hemmerle (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) led the charge with two goals, while freshmen Peter Sauerhoff (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) and Reid Fox (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) each scored once.
GW closed the gap to 8-5 with two goals from John-Claude Wright early in the fourth. Hopkins answered with goals from senior Ryan McCormack (Glen Head, NY/Chaminade) and Sauerhoff. The Colonials made a late push, with goals from Hornberger and David Zenk, but Hopkins held on for the win.
Junior Mitch Williams (San Diego, CA/Patrick Henry) played the first and third quarters in goal for the Jays and finished with four saves. Sophomore Chris Hutchens (Los Altos, CA/Bellarmine Prep) played the second and fourth quarters and finished with five saves. Chris Whittam finished with eight saves in goal for the Colonials.
Hopkins returns to action Friday night when the #17 Bucknell Bison visit Baltimore. The match is set for 9:00 p.m. in the White Athletic Center. On Saturday, the Blue Jays face off against the #15 Princeton Tigers. That match is set for 12:00 p.m.
