BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team suffered another close lose Saturday afternoon, falling to #15 Princeton 14-12 at the Newton White Athletic Center. The Blue Jays fall to 10-12 on the season with the loss, while the Tigers move to 12-5. Junior Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle) and sophomore Peter Davis (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) led the Jays with four goals apiece.
The first half was tightly contested as the teams headed into the break tied at 5-5. Princeton jumped on the home team in the third quarter, scoring six goals to Hopkins' one. But the Blue Jays rallied in the fourth, outscoring the Tigers 6-3, but it was not enough to overcome a tough third quarter.
Also scoring for Hopkins were sophomore Josh Kratz (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) with two and junior Chris Hemmerle (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) and sophomore Alex Bond (North Wales, PA/Germantown Academy) with one each. Sophomore Chris Hutchens (Los Altos, CA/Bellarmine Prep), playing in goal for the first and third quarters, finished with six saves. Junior Mitch Williams (San Diego, CA/Patrick Henry), playing in the second and fourth quarters, finished with three saves. Tigers goalie, Scottt Syverson, finished with 12 saves for the win.
Hopkins returns to action on October 21 at the 2006 Division III Eastern Championships. The Blue Jays are the two-time defending champions and have won nine DIII Eastern titles since 1994.
