BALTIMORE, MD - Behind two goals from senior Nikkole Haines (Ramona, CA/Ramona), the #11 Johns Hopkins women's soccer team defeated Franklin & Marshall 4-1 on a windy Saturday afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays (15-2, 10-0 CC) finish the regular season undefeated in conference play, the last team to accomplish an undefeated season in Centennial play was Muhlenberg in 2001.
The Blue Jays will also carry a seven-game win streak into next week's Centennial Conference Tournament, to be held at Homewood Field. Franklin & Marshall ends its season at 8-7-1, 3-7 in the Centennial with the loss.
Hopkins got on the board first in the 21st minute as Haines took a corner kick that managed to curve right into the back of the net. The Blue Jays made it a 2-0 lead just before the half, as freshman Kate Dunn (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) hit senior Lindsey Kimura (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake) with a pass. Kimura knocked the ball past the Diplomats keeper for her first goal of the year.
The Blue Jays made it 3-0 in the 65th minute as senior Laurie Baumann (Milford, MI/Greenhills School) scored her sixth goal of the year. Franklin & Marshall got on the board in the 73rd minute as Kelly Cassels beat goalie Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick). Hopkins closed out the scoring in the 80th minute as Haines picked up her second goal of the day and Dunn got the assist, her second of the contest.
Guszkowski had to make just one save in net for the Blue Jays while Robyn Jones made five saves for the Diplomats.
Hopkins returns to action next weekend when the Blue Jays host the Centennial Conference Tournament, starting Friday. The Blue Jays will play the winner of the #4/#5 game to be played early next week.
