BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team finished first at this weekend's Thomas Murphy Invitational hosted by Loyola College (MD). Hopkins defeated host Loyola 211.5-136.5. Hopkins beat Howard 268-37 and VMI 290-58. The Blue Jays won 13 of the 20 events at the Invitational.
Hopkins opened with a win in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:37.18. Next up was a second place finish for sophomore Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) in the 500 Free with a season's best time of 4:47.44. Freshman Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) then took first in the 200 IM with a team season's best time of 1:58.59. Junior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy) then won the first of his two events, with a time of 21.70 in the 50 Free.
Hopkins finished second in the 800 Free Relay with a time of 7:09.42. Senior Rich Guerard (Chatham, NJ/Morristown-Beard) swam the first leg, followed by Kleinguetl, Mahoney and Test. The Blue Jays followed that with a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:28.36. Test swam the first leg, followed by senior Kevin Walsh (Athens, GA/Cedar Shoals), freshmen Chris Whelan (Tewksbury, NJ/Delbarton) and AJ Blood (McClean, VA/Sidwell Friends).
Kleinguetl got the first of his two wins in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:15.15. In the 100 Fly, Hopkins took the top four spots, led by sophomore Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) with a time of 52.88. Test finished in second (53.27), senior Keith Parent (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) took third (53.27) and freshman Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) finished in fourth (54.66). Guerard then took second in the 200 Free with a time of 1:45.66 .
In the 100 Back, Hopkins claimed the top three spots, led by freshman John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) (53.32). Walsh finished in second (55.59) and sophomore John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) finished in third (56.45). In the 100 Breast, Fedderly got his first win of the day, finishing in 1:00.51. Kleinguetl followed that with a win in the 1650 Free (16:38.21). Guerard placed third with a time of 17:37.45.
Hopkins then won the 200 Medley Relay, with a time of 1:39.56. Thomas swam the first leg, followed by Fedderly, Parent and Mahoney. Walsh then won the 200 Back (2:00.83), with Kleinguetl taking second (2:03.40), Guerard third (2:04.56) and sophomore David Postetter (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) fourth (2:04.88). Test won the 100 Free, finishing in 47.15. Fedderly then got his second win, finishing in 2:13.92 in the 200 Breast. Kegelman finished second (2:15.43), freshmen Todd Spock (Niceville, FL/Niceville) finished third (2:15.71) and Frank Long (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) finished in fourth (2:16.66).
Sershon got his second win of the day, taking first in the 200 Fly (1:59.50), with Parent taking second (2:00.06) and Moisiades taking third (2:04.90).
Hopkins will have off next weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Blue Jays then return to action at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, OH November 30 through December 2.
