Durham, NC - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team dropped five dual matches at the Duke Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Jays dropped tough decisions to Brandeis, MIT, Temple, North Carolina and Duke. Hopkins returns to action at the NIWFA Championships February 25 in Medford, MA.
The Blue Jays opened with a tough loss to Brandeis. The Judges won all three weapons to take a 20-7 win over Hopkins. The Blue Jays next faced MIT, who won all three weapons in a 22-5 win.
Next up, Hopkins faced the Temple Owls, who won all five of their dual matches at the invitational. The Blue Jays lost in all three weapons in a 23-4 loss. Against the Tar Heels in their next dual meet, the Blue Jays dropped tough decisions in the epee and foil, before a 9-0 loss in the saber. North Carolina won the meet 20-7. In their final meet of the day, the Blue Jays faced the host Duke Blue Devils. Duke won all three weapons to take a 23-4 decision.
For the Blue Jays, freshman Grace Fried (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) went 6-9 in the foil. Sophomore Cindy Liu (Walnut, CA/Walnut) and senior Katherine Dunne (Beacon, NY/Beacon) each posted 4-11 records in the epee. And in the saber, freshman Erica Hartman (Silver Spring, MD/Montgomery Blair) posted a 4-11 record.
