ALLENTOWN, PA - Lauren Boyle converted three free throws with just two seconds remaining to seal the 2006 Centennial Tournament Championship for Muhlenberg Sunday afternoon. The Mules (25-2) defeated Johns Hopkins (20-7) 55-50 at Memorial Hall.
Senior Amanda Leese (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) posted her second double-double of the weekend and seventh of the season and senior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City) had a game-high 19 points to pace the Blue Jays. Boyle led the Mules with 16 points.
Muhlenberg jumped on Hopkins early, building an 11 point lead with 10:48 to play in the first half. But the Jays battled back, taking their first lead of the game with 1:11 to play on a layup by Leese. Boyle answered with a jumper to knot the score at 27-27 with just three seconds to play. Kristen Piscadlo (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) stole the inbounds pass and nailed a layup at the buzzer to give the Mules a 29-27 lead at the half.
The game was tight from the start of the second half, as neither team was able to build a large lead. There were six lead changes and the game was tied six times in the last 20 minutes. Hopkins took a 50-49 lead with 1:20 to play, but Muhlenberg answered with 52 seconds left to take the lead back. From there, Muhlenberg four-of-five free throws to earn the win.
Leese finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Julie Miller (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) joined her teammates in double figures with 15 points.
Hopkins will wait until Monday morning to hear if an NCAA bid lay in the future. Muhlenberg earned the league's automatic bid with the championship.
