BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) nailed six three-pointers to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to an 83-42 win over Villa Julie Thursday night in non-conference action at Goldfarb Gym. The win was the eighth straight for the Blue Jays, who improved to 18-4 overall. The Mustangs fell to 15-5 on the season.
Hopkins opened the game on a 10-0 run on the strength of eight points from senior Katie Kimball (Garden City, NY/Garden City). The Mustangs finally got on the board at 15:14 in the first with back-to-back buckets by sophomores Tanisha Foster (Baltimore, MD/St. Francis Academy) and Amanda Courter (Baltimore, MD/Mercy). Six points would be as close as Villa Julie got, as the Blue Jays pulled away, regaining a double-digit lead at 11:17 in the half.
Hopkins pushed its lead to 24 points with 1:28 to play in the half, before a layup by Forster and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by junior Cara Hill (Oxon Hill, MD/Oxon Hill) cut the score to 41-21 heading into the lockerroom. Kimball had a game-high 10 points at the half, followed by Sloane and freshman Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) with nine each. Hill led the Mustangs with nine points.
The Blue Jays jumped on the Mustangs in the second half, shooting 46.9% from the floor, to put the game out of reach. Sloane finished with a career-high18 points on the night, shooting 6-of-8 from behind the three-point line. She also had three assists. Kimball finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Phillips scored 13 for the second-straight game and pulled in four rebounds.
For the Mustangs, Hill finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Foster was the only other player in double figures with 12 points. She also had four blocks and two assists.
Hopkins 83 points is a season-high and the most points for the Blue Jays since an 87-49 win over Haverford on February 12, 2005. Villa Julie's 42 points is the lowest offensive outing this season for the Mustangs.
Hopkins returns to action this weekend as the Blue Jays travel to Ursinus on Saturday, February 11. Hopkins enters the game in first place in the Centennial Conference, while Ursinus is in sixth place - one spot out of the playoffs. Game time is set for 1 pm in Collegeville, PA.
