BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team opened its season with a 1-1 mark on day one of the Asics/Hopkins Invitational. Hopkins fell to Marymount in the first match of the day by a score of 3-1 (30-26, 28-30, 28-30, and 25-30). In the second match of the day, the Blue Jays downed Mt. Aloysius, 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-22).
After dropping game one of the match versus Hopkins, Marymount rallied to win three straight games and capture the match. The Saints were led by Christina LaVigna and Lauren Gay, who had 14 kills apiece. Julia Ralston nailed down 23 digs and Bea Livioco dished out 46 assists for Marymount. The Blue Jays were led by junior Natalia Fijalkowski with 14 kills, senior Lizzie Kay with 24 digs, and sophomore Amanda Lewis with 43 assists.
Hopkins bounced back in its second match of the night, claiming the victory in three games over the Mounties. Fijalkowski produced seven kills, Kay had 12 digs, and Lewis again led the way with 28 assists in two games. Freshman Allison Cappelaere made the most of her first appearance for the Blue Jays with three aces. Katie Byrne led the way for Mt. Aloysius with 18 assists.
Hopkins returns to action on day two of the Asics/Hopkins Invitational with a match against FDU-Florham at 9am. FDU split its two matches on the opening day.
