LEWISBURG, PA - The #20 Johns Hopkins water polo team fell to 4-4 on the season with a 15-5 loss to #11 St. Francis on Saturday. The Blue Jays went 2-2 at the Bucknell Invitational. Five different Blue Jays scored in the loss to the Terriers. It was the Jays' second loss to the Terriers this season.
St. Francis opened up strong, scoring eight unanswered goals to start the match. Hopkins finally got on the board in the closing minute of the second quarter. Junior Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle) scored with 57 seconds remaining, followed by junior Chris Hemmerle (Harleysville, PA/ Souderton) with 12 seconds left, cutting the score to 8-2.
The Terriers pushed their lead back up with two goals at the start of the third, leading 10-2. Hopkins got one back to make it 10-3 when freshman James Neuwirth (Ross, CA/Phillips Academy Andover) scored with 3:27 to go in the quarter. St. Francis answered with a five-goal outing in the final quarter, outscoring Hopkins' 5-2 to make it a 15-5 match. Senior David Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep) and sophomore Jesse Fox (San Diego, CA/Valhalla) both scored for the Jays' in the quarter.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 20 when the George Washington Colonials visit. The match is set for 8:00 p.m. in the Newton White Athletic Center.
