ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team successful defended its Maryland Division III Tournament title by going 2-0 on day two of the action. The Blue Jays started out their day by defeating Salisbury, 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-28). Hopkins then defeated host St. Mary's also by a 3-0 score (30-27, 30-26, 30-21).
In the Salisbury match, the Blue Jays were led by freshman Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and sophomore Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) as both players recorded a double-double for the match. Cappelaere had 15 kills and 14 digs while Jackanich chipped in with 12 kills and 13 digs. Senior Lizzie Kay (Pacific Palisades, CA/The Cate School) had 32 digs for the match while sophomore Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) produced 43 assists and eight digs.
In the St. Mary's match, Cappelaere was once again one of the leaders for the Blue Jays as she had 14 kills and senior Laura Carrihill (Manhasset, NY/Convent of the Sacred Heart) also had 14 kills and Jackanich chipped in 10. Kay and fellow senior Adri Eisen (New York, NY/Trinity) led the Blue Jays in the digs category for this match as Kay had 25 and Eisen had 21. Lewis had 48 assists and five digs. As a team, the Blue Jays hit .313 for the match.
Jackanich was named the Tournament MVP for her efforts and play this weekend.
Hopkins is back in action on September 22nd when the team travels to New York to take part in the NYU Mid-Fall Classic. The Blue Jays will face Ithaca on Friday at 4 pm.
