Sept. 6, 2006

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's water polo team, ranked #1 in the CWPA Division III poll, upset Santa Clara 10-8 at the Navy Open over the weekend. The Broncos were ranked #18 in the National Division I poll heading into the weekend. Reigning CWPA Player of the Year, junior Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle) led the Jays with five goals in the win.

Hopkins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from McCreery, sophomores Alex Bond (North Wales, PA/Germantown Academy) and Peter Davis (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich). The Broncos answered by outscoring the Blue Jays 5-1 in the second quarter, to take a 5-4 lead. McCreery scored the lone goal in the second for the Jays.

This time it was Hokins that responded with a five-goal quarter, outscoring Santa Clara 5-1 in the third stanza to retake the lead at 9-6. McCreery and Davis handled the scoring for the Blue Jays in the quarter. Jack Wall scored the Broncos only goal in the third. Santa Clara had the edge in the final quarter, outscoring the Jays 2-1, but it was not enough to overcome the third quarter deficit.
