BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Kristen Cubicciotti scored with :30 seconds remaining in overtime to lift #3 The College of New Jersey over the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team 1-0 on Monday afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays (6-4-1) lost their second straight 1-0 decision and remain winless in nine tries versus the Lions (10-0-1).
The first half of play was dominated by action at the midfield. Hopkins had an early shot but TCNJ got a couple of chances late and out shot the Blue Jays 6-1 in the first half.
Both teams had golden opportunities in the second half. In the 58th minute, Brittany McGinley and Briann McDonough got shots off for the Lions but a couple of timely plays by senior Johanna Chapin (Madison, WI/Madison West) and the Blue Jay defense kept them off the board. In the 64th and 65th minutes, sophomores Natalie Held (Potomac, MD/Churchill) and Kate Dunn (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) fired off shots that Lions keeper Jessica Clarke was able to get a hand on and the game headed for overtime.
The Blue Jays best chance in overtime came just over five minutes in as junior Francesca Peretti (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) ripped off a shot that the Lion defense managed to block. That set the stage of Cubicciotti's game-winner. The Lions were awarded a corner kick that sophomore net minder Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) was able to tip over the net. That gave TCNJ a second chance as Courtney Krol took the corner from the far side and Cubicciotti was able to head it home for the win.
TCNJ finished the contest leading in shots (19-6) and corner kicks (5-0). Clarke made three saves in net for the Lions while Guszkowski turned away nine shots.
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 3 at Swarthmore. Game time with the #19 Garnet is set for 8:00 p.m.
