Drake Nets Two in #18 Hopkins' Win Over Ursinus

Box Score

Oct. 12, 2007

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman David Drake (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored two goals in a span of 27 seconds to lead #18 Johns Hopkins past Ursinus 5-0 Friday night. The Blue Jays improve their record to 13-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Bears fall to 6-6-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the conference.

Hopkins jumped on the board in the 13th minute off a nicely played corner kick by sophomore Nick Gauna (Evanston, IL/Evanston). Junior Matty Carlson (Bristol, CT/Loomis Chaffee) headed the ball to the back post past Bears' goalie Ed de Gottal. Gauna pushed the Blue Jays lead to two when he beat several defenders across the 18-yard line and then fired a shot just inside the left post.

Drake scored his first of the night at 57:00 off a nice pass from senior Ben McAbee (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) inside the Bears' box. Just 27 seconds later, Drake stole the ball off the feet of an Ursinus defender and buried it at the far post for his 10th of the season. The 27-second span ranks as the fifth fastest time for consecutive goals by the same player in NCAA Division III history. Freshman Rob Lehnhoff (Kingsville, MD/Calvert Hall) closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute when he collected a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a hard shot to the upper right corner. It is the first collegiate goal of his career.

Sophomore goalie Matt Mierley (Weston, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) made three saves in earning his third career shutout. de Gottal finished with 12 saves in the loss for the Bears.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 17 when #17 York College visits historic Homewood Field. The non-conference match is set for 7:00 pm.
