BALTIMORE, MD - The #16 Bucknell Bison used a solid first half to take a 12-9 win over Johns Hopkins Saturday evening in CWPA Southern Division action. The Blue Jays even their record at 10-10 with the loss, while the Bison improve to 14-10.
Bucknell struck first when Jason Rechel scored at 6:33. Junior Peter Davis (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) evened the score at 1-1 with his first of the night at 3:24. Rechel gave the Bison back the lead at 2:13 but a goal from senior Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle) knotted the score at 2-2 with 1:19 to play in the opening quarter. Rechel found the net again, just nine seconds later to push the lead back to one.
Kyle Roslyn pushed the Bison's lead to two just 27 seconds into the second. Senior Chris Hemmerle (Harlyesville, PA/Souderton) answered for the Blue Jays at 7:01. Back-to-back goals by Rechel and Alex Lampley gave Bucknell a 6-3 lead with 4:43 to play in the second. Davis and Mark Masternson then traded goals as the Bison took a 7-4 lead into the half.
Coming out of the break, Bucknell pushed out to a 10-5 lead. Hopkins rallied in the closing minutes of the third, outscoring Bucknell 3-1 with McCreery getting all three goals for the Jays. The Bison led 11-8 at the start of the fourth. Turnovers and hit posts were the story for Hopkins in the fourth as Bucknell held on for the win.
Hopkins now sits in third in the CWPA Southern Division - East Region with six points. Navy sits atop the standings with 12 points, while Bucknell is second with eight. The Blue Jays take on the Midshipmen at 11:00 am on Sunday in Annapolis. Hopkins then closes out the regular season at George Washington on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00 pm.
