Hopkins Downs Harvard, Falls to Navy & Brown

Oct. 23, 2007

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team (11-12) traveled to Navy on Sunday for three matches. The Blue Jays fell to the Navy Midshipmen (11-7), who currently lead the CWPA Southern Division-East Region. Hopkins then lost to Brown 9-8 before defeating Harvard 9-5.

Against Navy, the first quarter was even with the score knotted a two apiece, but a five-goal outing by the Midshipmen in the second made it a 7-3 game at the half. Navy extended its lead to six after outscoring Hopkins 2-0 in the third. The Blue Jays rallied in the fourth, scoring four goals to the Midshipmen's two, but it was not enough. Seniors Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle) and Joey Jankiewicz (Coronado, CA/ Coronado) led the way for Hopkins with two goals apiece.

In the middle game, Brown took command early, holding leads between each quarter. However, Hopkins scored three times to start the fourth quarter, tying the game 7-7 with five minutes to play. After the teams traded goals, Mike Gartner scored the game-winner with 1:58 remaining, as the Bears and goalie Kent Holland, who made two big saves to preserve the lead, held on. McCreery and junior Peter Davis (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) combined for seven goals in the loss. Junior Josh Kratz (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) also added a goal.

In the final game of the day, Hopkins jumped onto of Harvard early and led 6-2 in the second before a trio of Crimson goals made it a 6-5 game. The Blue Jays responded to take the 9-5 win, led by McCreery's five goals. Davis, senior Chris Hemmerle (Harlyesville, PA/Souderton), sophomores Reid Fox (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) and Peter Sauerhoff (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) all contributed a goal in the win.

Hopkins closes out the regular season tonight at George Washington. The Blue Jays are currently tied for third in the CWPA Southern Division East Region with six Princeton. The Colonials are last with and 0-7 record in league play. The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Smith Center.
