Hopkins Hands Gettysburg First Centennial Loss with 3-1 Win

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team recorded a 3-1 victory over Gettysburg on Wednesday night in Baltimore. The Blue Jays (17-4, 3-1 CC) recorded just their fifth win all-time over the Bullets (12-6, 3-1 CC) and won two matches over the Bullets in one season for the first time since the 2000 season.

With game one tied at 19 all, Hopkins went on an 8-3 run to take the 26-22 lead. The Blue Jays got five straight points with sophomore Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) serving including two aces from Cappelaere. The Blue Jays captured game one by a 30-23 score. In game two, Hopkins jumped out to the early 9-4 lead and held on for a 30-23 win. Game three saw the two teams locked in a battle with seven different ties. Gettysburg captured game three by a 30-25 score as the hitting proved to be the difference. Gettysburg hit .237 in game three compared to Hopkins who hit .022. Hopkins came out firing in game four, jumping out to the early 12-6 lead and taking game four by a score of 30-18 after hitting .368 in the game.

Gettysburg got a double-double from Amanda Krampf and Kristina Mercier. Krampf had 38 assists and 14 digs while Mercier contributed 15 kills and 10 digs. Mekenna Sigai tied for the team lead in digs with 14. Gettysburg hit .171 for the match.

Hopkins had four starters reach double digit kills for the match. Junior Adrienne Young (Oakton, VA/Thomas Jefferson) and Cappelaere tied for the team lead in kills with 13. Cappelaere finished with a double-double as she had 13 kills and 12 digs. Junior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) dished out 52 assists and now needs just 44 more assists to tie for the JHU career assists mark.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday October 6 at Swarthmore. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
