BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team won the Thomas Murphy Invitational hosted by Loyola College this weekend. Also participating was the Virginia Military Institute.
After taking second place in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 4:06.66, the Blue Jays swept the top three spots in the 500 Free with junior Elissa Stautner (Conroe, TX/Academy of Science and Technology) taking first with a time of 5:10.28. Junior Kate Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) took second (5:15.17) with freshman Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) taking third (5:16.49). The Blue Jays then swept the top four spots in the 200 IM. Freshman Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) won the event in a time of 2:15.75, with sophomore Caitlin Dennis (Moorestown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy) following in second (2:15.90) and sophomore Lisa Qu (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) in third (2:16.10).
Hopkins won the 800 Free Relay, beating Loyola by nearly six seconds. Hansen, freshman Mary Claire Kozlowski (Fairfax, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary), junior Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge) and Stautner swam the relay for the Blue Jays. Hopkins followed that with a win in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:42.83. Senior Erica Pakkala (Lititz, PA/Warwick), junior Val Neff-Rasmussen (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer), Hansen and freshman Elizabeth Dowdle (Tampa, FL/Academy of the Holy Names) swam the relay. Hansen then won the 400 IM with a time of 4:39.91, with Kozlowski taking third (4:45.40).
Pakkala, Qu, and freshman Meagan Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) then finished 1-2-3 in the 100 Fly, with Pakkala winning with a time of 1:01.81. Stautner followed with a win in the 200 Free (1:58.13) with Zepp finishing in third (2:00.89). Pakkala and Hansen then finished 1-2 in the 100 Back, followed by a win in the 100 Breast by Dennis. Zepp then won the 200 Back (2:15.61) while Stautner won the 100 Free (54.90). Dennis picked up another win in the 200 Breast (2:29.94) to wrap up the individual events.
Hopkins returns to action at the Nike Cup hosted by Kenyon beginning November 29 and running through December 1.
