HOBOKEN, NJ - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team went 1-1 at a Centennial Conference dual meet hosted by Stevens Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays (5-11, 3-4 CC) fell to the Merchant Marine Academy before defeating host school Stevens Tech.
In the match against the Merchant Marine Academy, Hopkins fell just shy losing by a score of 24-22. The Blue Jays had four straight wins as Mike Summer started the streak off with a major decision over Anthony Day at 133-pounds. Senior Marco Priolo recorded a pin at 141-pounds and James Gettinger followed that up with a 9-7 decision at 149-pounds. Jim Crumlish recorded the win by decision at 157-pounds before Merchant Marine got a win at 165-pounds. Senior David Kraus picked up a 7-2 decision at 174-pounds and Eric Fishel followed that up with an 8-4 decision at 184-pounds. The Merchant Marine Academy won the matches at 197 and 285 to clinch the victory.
Against Stevens Tech, Hopkins found itself down 22-9 despite a win from Priolo at 141-pounds and Crumlish at 157-pounds. The Blue Jays turned things around in the match starting with Kraus' forfeit win at 174-pounds. Fishel followed that up with a pin over Ernie Guaimano at 184-pounds. Tyler Schmidt recorded a 6-2 decision win over James Roarty at 197 pounds and Jonathan Freeman was a 7-5 winner at 285. That gave Hopkins a 27-22 victory in the match.
The Blue Jays will be back in action at the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Gettysburg on February 17th.
