DURHAM, NC - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 1-3 at the Duke Invitational Saturday. Hopkins defeated Air Force (16-11), while losing to Duke (22-5), Notre Dame (20-7) and North Carolina (18-9). Sophomore Grace Fried (Forest Hills, NY/Stuyvesant) led the Blue Jays with a 7-0 record against the Blue Devils, Irish, Falcons and Tar Heels.
Hopkins earned a 16-11 win over Air Force on the strength of an 8-1 win in the Foil. The Falcons won the Sabre and the Epee by 5-4 scores. The Blue Jays dropped a close match to the Tar Heels. North Carolina swept all three weapons, just edging the Blue Jays in the Foil (5-4). The Blue Jays suffered losses to strong Duke and Notre Dame squads.
In the foil, Fried led the Blue Jays with a 5-0 mark. Freshman Katie Kim (Garden City, NY/Garden City) posted a 3-2 record. Freshmen Samantha Dolan (S. Pasadena, CA/S. Pasadena) went 2-3, Hana Bao (Sharon, MA/Boston University Academy) went 0-2 and Ying Guo (Fargo, ND/Fargo South) went 0-1.
In the Sabre, junior Cindy Liu (Walnut, CA/Walnut) posted a 2-7 record. Senior Joanna Kochaniak (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) went 3-6 and senior Kim Strazdas (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) went 2-7. And in the Epee, sophomore Alla Brafman (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) went 2-7. Senior Sarah Smilow (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) posted a 3-6 mark. Sophomore Erica Hartmann (Silver Spring, MD/Montgomery Blair) went 3-5 and freshman Jessica Demoise (Pittsburg, PA) went 0-1.
Hopkins returns to action at the Northwestern Invitational February 24-25 in Evanston, IL.
