BALTIMORE, MD - With just under three weeks remaining until report day, Johns Hopkins head football coach Jim Margraff has announced several changes to the Blue Jay coaching staff for the upcoming season. Five of Margraff's nine assistant coaches for the upcoming season are returning, while there will be four new additions to the staff. Approximately 90 players are scheduled to report for camp on August 11-12 and the Blue Jays will open the 2007 season at Hampden-Sydney on September 1.
The most notable change to the staff for the coming season will be the promotion of Bob Chesney to defensive coordinator. Chesney spent the last two seasons as the defensive backs and special teams coach at Hopkins and replaces Frank Colaprete, who accepted a position on the staff at Georgetown. Chesney, who assumed the defensive coordinator's role prior to spring practice, helped guide the Blue Jays to the Centennial Conference Championship and the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs in his first season at Homewood (2005). The Blue Jay defense finished in the top three in the Centennial Conference in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and sacks last season.
A 2000 graduate of Dickinson College, Chesney has coached four defensive backs to All-Centennial honors in his two years at Johns Hopkins and worked closely with Ben Scott, who earned All-America honors as a punter and place-kicker last season. The Blue Jays have allowed 14 points or less 13 times in Chesney's two years on the coaching staff and held four of their last six opponents to 10 points or less in 2006.
Joining the Blue Jay coaching staff this season are Eddy Augustin (Millersville `94/Special Teams ? Linebackers), Chris Fallon (Towson `81/Strong Safeties), John Baker (Johns Hopkins `02/Wide Receivers) and Leif Glynn (Johns Hopkins `03/Defensive Line).
Augustin comes to Johns Hopkins after spending two years as the defensive line coach at Mansfield University. He will coach the special teams and linebackers this season. A four-year member of the football team at Millersville, Augustin spent two years as the running backs coach at his alma mater (1999-2000) before moving on to Norwich University, where he assumed responsibilities as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach after originally handling special teams. He coached at the high school level for three years prior to his time on the staff at Millersville. He later interned with the football programs at the University of Pennsylvania and Sonoma State and earned his master's degree in sports psychology.
Fallon joins the Blue Jay coaching staff after a highly-successful run at the high school level in the Baltimore area. He will coach the strong safeties (outside linebackers) in JHU's 4-4-3 defensive alignment. A 1981 graduate of nearby Towson University, Fallon spent the last three years as an assistant coach at Overlea High School, where he coached the running backs and linebackers. He helped guide the Falcons to the Class 2A North Regional Playoffs in 2005 and 2006. Prior to his three-year stint at Overlea, Fallon spent six years on the staff at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore. He coached wide receivers, defensive ends and linebackers for the Dons.
Baker will be making his collegiate coaching debut this fall as he returns to his alma mater to coach the receivers. Baker was a four-year member of the Blue Jay football team (1998-2001) and a valuable member of the team's receiver corps during his final two years. He concluded his career with 46 receptions for 574 yards and one touchdown. He enjoyed the finest season of his career as a junior, when he had a career-high 28 receptions for 359 yards and one touchdown.
Glynn was a dominating presence on the Blue Jay offensive line during the program's breakthrough seasons in 2001 and 2002 and returns to Homewood to coach the defensive line. Glynn started all 20 games at right tackle during his final two years and helped the Blue Jays to a 15-5 record over that period. The Blue Jays also grabbed a share of the 2002 Centennial Conference title and won the 2002 ECAC Southwest Championship with Glynn garnering First Team All-Centennial honors that season. With Glynn leading the way, the Blue Jays averaged over 180 yards rushing, 165 yards passing and 23.5 points per game during the 2001 and 2002 seasons combined.
