BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team captured the Asics/Hopkins Invitational with a pair of victories on Saturday. In their first match of the day, the Blue Jays recorded a 3-0 victory over the Mounties from Mt. Aloysius. In the battle of teams with 3-0 records, Hopkins pulled out the thrilling come from behind 3-2 win over Salisbury. Hopkins improves to 4-0 on the season with the wins.
In the match against Mt. Aloysius, Hopkins recorded the victory with a 30-9 win in game one and wins of 30-24 and 30-22 to close out the match. Hopkins held Mt. Aloysius to a -.222 hitting percentage in game one and .129 in the match. The Blue Jays hit .292 in the first game and .260 for the match. Senior Natalia Fijalkowski (Windsor, CA/Windsor) had 10 kills and four digs on the match. Sophomore Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) had seven kills and eight digs while junior Fiorella Castillo (Jamaica, NY/Francis Lewis) tied for the team lead in digs with eight. Junior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) dished out 22 assists in two games. Mt. Aloysius got 10 kills from Brianna Baker and 19 assists from Kate Byrne.
In the final match of the tournament it was Hopkins jumping out the early lead with a 30-18 win in game one. Salisbury bounced back and captured games two and three by scores of 30-27 and 30-28. The Blue Jays rallied with a game four win, 30-20. That win forced a decisive fifth game in the match. The Blue Jays and Sea Gulls were tied at three, eight, ten and twelve before Hopkins recorded the final three points for the victory. Cappelaere and junior Kim Jackanich (Pacificia, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) posted their first double-doubles of the year in the match. Cappelaere recorded 21 kills and 11 digs while Jackanich had 10 kills and 15 digs. Lewis dished out 48 assists while Castillo was the third Blue Jay to record double-digit digs with 13.
The Blue Jays captured the team title at the tournament for the second time in the last three years. Lewis and Jackanich were named to the Asics/Hopkins Invitational All-Tournament team for their play throughout the weekend. Rachel Downes from Salisbury, Emily Thompson of UMass-Boston, Brianna Baker of Mt. Aloysius and Meghan Smith from Goucher joined them on the all-tournament team.
Hopkins returns to action on September 5 as the team travels to Eastern for a 7 p.m. match.
