Hopkins Opens Centennial Play with 3-0 Win Over Muhlenberg

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team opened Centennial Conference play with a 3-0 win over Muhlenberg on Wednesday night in Baltimore. The Blue Jays (12-2, 1-0 CC) won their sixth straight contest and sixth straight against the Mules (5-7, 0-2 CC).

The Blue Jays took game one by a 30-15 margin. In game two Hopkins jumped out to an early 6-1 lead on Muhlenberg behind the strong serves of sophomore Rhea Alexander (Roseville, CA/Roseville). Leading 14-8 in the second game, the Blue Jays rallied off six straight points to take a 19-9 lead, junior Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) led the Blue Jays on serve. Hopkins would capture game two by a 30-17 score. The third game proved to be a battle as Hopkins opened up a 6-3 advantage only to see Muhlenberg make it a 6-5 game. The Mules would continue to battle in this one, not allowing the Blue Jays to take more then a five point lead before tying the game at 23-23. Hopkins would rally though to capture the third and final game of the match, 30-26.

Muhlenberg got 18 assists and six digs from Megan Eiser while Megan Young had seven digs.

Hopkins was led in the match by senior Natalia Fijalkowski (Windsor, CA/Windsor) who posted the double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Fijalkowski did not have an error on the night as she hit .519 (14 kills, 0 errors and 27 attempts). Jackanich had a strong night as she just missed the double-double with a match high 19 digs and added nine kills. Junior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) dished out 36 assists on the night to go along with her seven digs.

Hopkins returns to action on Friday, September 21 at the Salisbury Invitational. Hopkins is scheduled to play the host team, Salisbury at 4 p.m. and New Jersey City at 6 p.m.
