BALTIMORE, MD - Christopher Newport tallied two goals in each half and defeated the #16 Johns Hopkins women's soccer team 4-1 on Sunday. The Captains (2-0) claimed the championship of the Donna K. Lane/JHU Invitational while the Blue Jays (1-1) suffered their first loss since October 2nd of last year.
The Captains got on the board first in the 14th minute as Jenn Campbell tallied an unassisted goal. Christopher Newport added to its lead before the half as Becca Grady took a pass from Brittany Revels and knocked it home. Christopher Newport led 2-0 at the half while Hopkins had its chances in the first half. The Blue Jays out shot the Captains 9-2 in the first half as junior Molly Steele (Daleville, VA/North Cross) had a couple of near misses and Cassandra Vogel (Laurel Hollow, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) shot one just over the crossbar.
Christopher Newport added a pair of goals in the second half, both from Amanda Peters to take the 4-0 lead. Peters' first goal came on a cross from Megan Coheeney. Hopkins finally got on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute as freshman Allie Zazzali (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) took a cross from senior Kim Lane (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) and banged it home for her first career goal.
The Blue Jays out shot the Captains 15-5 for the game. Erin Wojtkun was solid in goal for Christopher Newport as she made seven saves and allowed just the one goal. Senior Kerry Hamilton (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) started in net for the Blue Jays and made one save while allowing four goals. Sophomore Jessica Cynowiec (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough) relieved Hamilton in net and was not forced to make a save.
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday night when Misericordia University comes to Homewood Field for a 7 p.m. game.
