BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team held off a second half run by Bryn Mawr College and defeated the Owls by a score of 63-57 on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, MD. The Blue Jays (3-7, 2-4 CC) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory as freshman Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) recorded a career-high in points and steals.
Trailing by 13 to start the second half, Bryn Mawr went on an 11-2 run to make it a 34-30 game with 13:02 to play. The Owls received six points from Katie Driscoll and three points from Jessica Allen during the stretch. A lay-up by sophomore Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) pushed the Blue Jay lead back to eight at 38-30 with 11:40 to play in the game. Bryn Mawr then outscored Hopkins 13-4 over the next five minutes to turn an eight-point deficit into a one-point lead at 43-42 with 6:57. It was the Owls first lead in the game since the opening minutes as they received seven from Allen and four from Driscoll in the spurt. A pair of free throws from sophomore Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) gave Hopkins the lead back at 44-43 with 6:22 left and the Blue Jays would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Hopkins outscored Bryn Mawr 19-14 over the final six minutes to preserve the victory. The Blue Jays were 9-of-12 from the foul line during that stretch to help seal the win. Burton had 10 of her 16 points in the final six minutes.
Hopkins found itself in an early 3-0 hole to start the game as Allen completed a traditional three-point play to give Bryn Mawr the lead at 18:58. The Blue Jays responded with a 12-2 run to turn a three-point deficit into a seven-point advantage with 13:07 to play in the half. Senior Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) notched three points during the Blue Jays streak. A lay-up by Burton at 10:17 gave Hopkins a 16-5 lead in the game. Bryn Mawr responded with an 8-4 spurt over the next three minutes to cut its deficit to seven at 20-13. The Owls got a pair of treys during the run from Jessica Allen and Emilie Naccarato. The Blue Jays outscored the Owls 12-6 to close out the half and take a 32-19 lead into the locker room.
Hopkins was led by Burton, who posted a career-high for the third straight game finishing with 16 points and six steals. She was also one rebound shy of a double-double grabbing nine on the afternoon. Dodrill posted double digit rebounds for the second straight game with 12, adding five points, four steals and two blocks. Mitchell was the second Blue Jay to finish with double digit rebounds grabbing 10. Hopkins finished with a 50-38 advantage on the boards for the day.
Driscoll, who finished with 20 points including five three-pointers, led Bryn Mawr. Allen recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Shanika Bridges-King also recorded double digit rebounds with 12 on the afternoon.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, January 15 when its hosts the College of Notre Dame. Tip time at Goldfarb Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
