CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team rallied from a 42-28 deficit at half time to defeat Washington College 69-60 on Wednesday night in Chestertown, MD. The Blue Jays (8-9, 6-5 CC) won their third straight game in come from behind fashion as junior Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds.
Hopkins trailed 50-39 with 13:55 to play in the game before it began its comeback. Senior Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) hit a pair of free throws at 13:29 to begin what would be a 19-2 run to turn the Blue Jays deficit into an eight-point advantage. Freshman Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) scored nine of the 13 tallies for Hopkins during the run while Dodrill had four. The Blue Jays were 9-of-13 from the foul line in the final three minutes to help preserve the lead. Junior Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) and sophomore Steph Kielb (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) each tallied three from the stripe during that span. Hopkins outscored Washington 30-10 in the final 12 minutes of the game for the comeback win.
The first half had been all Washington as with the game tied at 4-4, the Shorewomen embarked on a 17-4 run that covered just over three minutes. Jane O'Donnell had six points while Jessycka Wilson contributed four as Washington led 21-8 with 13:07 to play in the half. The two teams traded baskets before five quick points from O'Donnell put the Shorewomen up 28-13 with 8:52 to go in the first stanza. Hopkins answered with a 15-4 run of its own to cut the Washington lead to 32-28 with 3:10 to go. Freshman Siobhan Callanan (Barrington, IL/Barrington) had all six of her points during the spree while Phillips knocked down five. Washington however would score the final 10 points of the half to take a 42-28 lead to the locker room.
Phillips posted her fourth double-double of the season to lead the Blue Jays. She finished with 17 points and the career-high 18 rebounds. Dodrill was just shy of a double-double as she ended the night with 11 points and nine rebounds. Burton was the third Blue Jay in double figures, scoring all 13 of her points in the second half. Kielb finished with a career-high nine points, four assists and just one turnover in 28 minutes of work.
O'Donnell who knocked down 27 points, 24 of which came in the first half of the game, led Washington. Jessica Jamrogowicz finished with nine points while Elise Conway led the Shorewomen on the boards with eight.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, February 2 when it hosts Ursinus College. Tip time in Goldfarb Gymnasium is set for 4 p.m.
