Blue Jays Take Three Consecutive Sets to Overcome Diplomats

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team recorded its best hitting percentage in Centennial Conference action in 2008 to fly past Franklin & Marshall, 3-1 at home. Hopkins is now 16-5 (4-1 CC) on the season as the Diplomats slip to 8-12 (3-2 CC). Head coach Greg Giovanazzi and the Blue Jays are now 5-1 at home this season.

Franklin & Marshall took a 5-1 lead in the first set before Hopkins returned to take a 13-8 lead. As each team pushed points, the score was tied at 20 down the stretch. With the score knotted again at 25, a Blue Jay attack error gave F & M the one-point edge, 26-25. Margot Phelan got the kill for the Diplomats to end the set, 27-25. In the second set, the Blue Jays hopped to a 7-2 lead prior to capitalizing on seven F&M errors to race to a 17-7 advantage. Hopkins continued its spree, easily taking the set, 25-15.

JHU earned its biggest gap of the third set, proceeding to an 18-7 lead. F&M launched a comeback, coming within four points, 22-18. Hopkins maintained its composure to take the third set, 25-19, and take a 2-1 advantage in the match.

It was Hopkins again in the fourth set, racing to a 12-6 lead. The Diplomats battled back to within three, 19-16 before the Blue Jays earned the win off a Diplomat attack error, 25-20. Hopkins claimed the match, 3-1.

Junior Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) led the Blue Jays with her 12-kill, 15-dig double-double. Senior Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius) and junior Rhea Alexander (Roseville, CA/Roseville) each had 15 digs, while junior Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco University HS) recorded 11 kills. Senior Amanda Lewis tallied 31 assists, just 135 assists away from the Centennial Conference career assist record. The Blue Jays continue their homestand, hosting Swarthmore on Saturday, October 18. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
